Conversation

Approximately one hundred people attended the sold out ‘Neil Tennant in Conversation’ event at the National Portrait Gallery on Thursday 11th January 2007. Guests on stage were Phillip Hoare, Chris Heath, Michael Bracewell and of course Neil Tennant. The four were up on a small stage, with a projector screen behind and PSB pictures on the right hand side. In the audience was iconic PSB photographer, Eric Watson. As expected, Chris Lowe was not in attendance.

Michael Bracewell led the discussion, giving the audience a background talk about most of the pictures that were projected on the screen, before asking Neil, Phillip and Chris questions. The discussion lasted just over one hour, due to restrictions placed by the National Portrait Gallery.

The last ten minutes of the discussion were open to questions, all aimed at Neil. When asked “what next?” (and a variety of other questions) Neil said that he and Chris were going back into the studio to record/write some new tracks, and that they are considering writing a ballet for ‘a friend’. The 1989 tour is being considered for release on DVD. The concert was recorded on high density tape, as the record label were too financially restrained to record it on any other format. Neil also answered a question about their work with Brian Eno. He said that they had recorded ‘Something Special’, and that they had planned to record the entire ‘Closer to Heaven’ soundtrack, but nothing came of that.

I was fortunate enough to be sat on the second row, and had a fantastic view. The theatre we were in seemed like a small Savoy Theatre, with the stage very close to the audience. After the event Neil, Chris and Phillip went down to the PSB exhibition area and signed books, posters and probably everything else that was thrown at them. I asked Neil how Chris felt about performing ‘Paninaro’ last week, to which he replied ‘He felt good. It’ll probably be kept in [the setlist]‘.

A fantastic, special evening. Hello to Andrew, Tom, the female who flew from another country just for this event, and the others (who’s names I have forgotten..!)
