PSB Call Music Downloaders Thieves

The Pet Shop Boys have lashed-out at fans who download their songs off the internet, describing the practise as "theft."

During the duo's Top Of The Pops webchat on April 17th, a seething Neil Tennant hissed: "It's a fact of modern life. I find it kind of annoying that your album is stolen and put on the internet you don't have the responsibility about releasing things anymore. You don't have the choice."

Earlier this year, PSB fansite www.petshopboys-online.com were forced to remove preview tracks of the 'Boys latest album, Release, after it came to the attention of Neil and Chris's label, Parlophone.

At the time, the administrator of the popular fansite said, in a post: "Due to copyright violations I was asked to remove every RealAudio stream from the music section. There will be no possibility to listen to any song. I'm very disappointed about this request and think about closing this site. I feel like quitting this job. Pet Shop Boys are music. A website about Pet Shop Boys without showing there music seems to be worthless."

The TOTP session saw Neil continue to explain that, if he and Chris Lowe wanted to upload tracks onto the net, they'd do so via their official website, www.petshopboys.co.uk. However, while Neil acknowledges that their fans are indeed devoted, he reasoned they don't understand what they're doing by downloading material from the net.

"There's a weird morality on the internet," Neil mused, explaining, "People think it's okay to steal things because it doesn't feel like stealing. I think people should get their heads round the fact that its stealing. But the music industry isn't really bothered. People say 'I downloaded your album but I'm still going to buy it', but it's still stealing. We think music is precious and has value."
