MUSIC DOES THE TALKING

It's 25 years since Elvis Presley died and the Pet Shop Boys rendered a belting Always On My Mind halfway through their curious mix of classics and newer material.

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are veterans of techno-pop but their back catalogue is to die for, with collaborations featuring the likes of Robbie Williams and Dusty Springfield. The segue of Where the Streets Have No Name (U2) and Can't Take My Eyes Off You (Andy Williams) was splendidly done.

They cleverly let the music do the talking, with no deep dialogue between songs, ably backed by two guitars and a mean drummer.

We were treated to an anthemic Go West where the mixed-aged audience pretended to be construction workers, ?? la Village People.

The new guitar-based material takes time to settle on the ear but Home And Dry came across beautifully whereas Sexy Northerner was politely received by an audience keen to hear Domino Dancing, West End Girls, and the rousing It's A Sin.
